Dear (Insert MP Name)
I am writing to you as a constituent and member of the Northern Rock Shareholder Action Group (NRSAG).
The NRSAG recently sent an appeal to the Treasury Select Committee (TSC) requesting an investigation and adjudication. You can visit the NRSAG website for more information on our case:
https://www.nrsag.co.uk/
I am writing to appeal for your assistance in seeking fair compensation for the estimated 150,000 small shareholders who had their shares confiscated when Northern Rock Plc was nationalised in 2008.
I strongly believe that it is wrong for the government to retain the entire surplus gained from the disposal of Northern Rock assets, to recover losses they made from the actual bad banks that got into trouble. Many other banks got into financial difficulty such as the Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds, but they were treated completely differently to Northern Rock.
You will have heard about the Post Office scandal in recent times that resulted in more than 900 sub-postmasters being wrongly prosecuted for stealing because of incorrect information from a computer system called Horizon. This was absolutely dreadful and I hope those impacted are all fully compensated and their convictions are overturned, but to put things into perspective, a relatively small number of people were affected compared to Northern Rock. The NR scandal affected thousands and thousands of ordinary people, their families, their pensions, their nest eggs and inheritance.
If the Government fails to review the Northern Rock situation and provide adequate compensation to the bank’s former shareholders, employees, pensioners and savers then seeing a similar drama to Mr Bates vs The Post Office in the near future will not come as a surprise.
Although we acknowledge that share prices can fluctuate, we do not expect that shares can be taken away without providing fair and proper compensation, especially when in our case, it turns out that Northern Rock's assets i.e. the £100+ billion mortgage book that belonged to its previous owners, was very strong.
I urge you to support our campaign by writing to the Chair of the Treasury Select Committee, Harriett Baldwin MP requesting that the appeal by the NRSAG for a review is accepted. The group will also appreciate your public support for our campaign.
We do not demand great fortunes in compensation, but a fair and just amount. The Government has earned a sizable surplus in the years after nationalisation, even though all Government assistance was completely reimbursed in those years, including interest paid at penal rates at no expense to the UK public. The Government should review its original compensation decision, given that the updated and widely confirmed numbers prove a huge surplus.
Thousands of people have been impacted by this scandal. I request that you read the comments from normal, working-class people who held shares in Northern Rock on the NRSAG Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/nrsag/
Thanking you in anticipation.
Yours sincerely
